The Canada Start-up Visa (SUV) Program, originally designed to fast-track the permanent residency of foreign entrepreneurs with innovative business ideas, now faces significant delays with processing times extending to 53 months. This backlog has sparked concerns about the program’s efficacy in attracting global talent. Initially a 12-month process, the SUV’s wait times have expanded due to misuse and a backlog of over 42,000 applications. The program, managed by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) since last year, has seen a reduction in admissions to manage immigration levels, further contributing to delays. Issues have been raised about the quality of applications, particularly from incubators, which make up 80% of submissions. Critics argue that the SUV’s design allows ‘bad actors’ to exploit the system, leading to an influx of subpar applications. To address these issues, the IRCC has introduced a three-year open work permit for SUV applicants and is considering legislative changes to reduce wait times. Despite these challenges, there is a belief that the SUV holds potential as a strategic economic tool if reformed effectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
