The U.S. Department of Energy has taken equity stakes in the Canadian company Lithium Americas and its Nevada mining joint venture with General Motors. This move is part of a renegotiation of a $2.26 billion federal loan. The U.S. government acquired a 5% equity ownership in both Lithium Americas and the Lithium Americas-GM joint venture through no-cost warrants, which serve as additional collateral on the loan. The initiative aims to strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce dependence on foreign sources for critical minerals. Lithium Americas is developing the Thacker Pass mine in Nevada, anticipated to produce lithium sufficient for 800,000 electric vehicles annually in its first phase. The announcement led to a significant spike in Lithium Americas’ stock, highlighting the importance of lithium in the production of electric vehicle batteries.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
