GM’s New Battery Technology Promises Affordable, Long-Range EVs
News Summary
General Motors (GM) has unveiled a new battery technology that promises to revolutionize electric vehicles (EVs) by offering more affordable and long-range options. The company, in collaboration with LG Energy Solutions through their joint venture Ultium Cells, introduced lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells. These cells are expected to offer 30% more energy density at the same production cost, potentially lowering the cost of electric trucks and SUVs to match that of gasoline-powered vehicles.
The LMR battery cells aim to provide over 400 miles of range while maintaining significant cost savings compared to current high-nickel batteries. This advancement in battery technology is seen as a significant step towards the mass adoption of EVs, circumventing China’s dominance in the field by reducing dependency on lithium iron-phosphate (LFP) chemistry. GM plans to integrate these cells into its future electric lineup, with full production anticipated by 2028.
